Neo N3 and Neo Legacy: What Changed

Want to run a dedicated NEO validator? Let’s talk!

Everstake’s Business Development team is always in search of new ways to be useful to our partners and exceed their expectations.

What Is NEO and How NEO Staking Works: Hold NEO, Vote, Get GAS

NEO is the governance token of the Neo N3 blockchain, an open-source, community-driven network that was among the first to support smart contracts. NEO staking is a governance vote: you hold your NEO, you vote for a consensus node member on governance.neo.org, and the protocol pays you GAS for participating.

The network has a dual-token model:

  • NEO is the asset you hold and vote with: its supply is fixed at 100,000,000, where 1 NEO = 1 vote.
  • GAS is the utility token you generate and spend on network fees. It is divisible to 0.00000001 GAS, and Neo N3 emits 1 GAS per block, which is how NEO can generate rewards while staying in your wallet.

Everstake takes part in this system as a Neo Council member, identified by the public key 035d574cc6a904e82dfd82d7f6fc9c2ca042d4410a4910ecc8c07a07db49dc6513.

NEO staking with Everstake is non-custodial: Everstake never holds your NEO or GAS, and your private key never leaves your wallet.

NEO Staking Data at a Glance

  • Everstake fee on NEO voting: 0%

  • Minimum NEO to vote: 1 NEO
  • Lock-up: none, so NEO stays in your wallet and the vote can be changed at any time
  • Slashing: none, because Neo N3 governance voting has no slashing mechanism
  • First GAS reward: immediately after the vote is confirmed
  • Custody: non-custodial

GAS Staking Rewards: Voting vs Not Voting at 1,000 NEO

GAS staking rewards on Neo N3 come from a vote-weighted share of a fixed emission. Holding NEO generates a small amount of GAS on its own, while voting for a Neo Council member generates materially more, because the protocol routes a larger share of emitted GAS to voters and Neo Council members.

At 1,000 NEO, not voting generates roughly 0.04 GAS per day, while voting for Everstake generates roughly 1.64 GAS per day.

Neo N3 emits 1 GAS per block and produces a block roughly every 3 seconds, so the total GAS created over time is fixed and your share moves with network-wide participation. Use the calculator on this page to estimate your GAS from voting.

How to Vote for Everstake and Get GAS

Your GAS reward begins immediately after the vote is confirmed on governance.neo.org.

  1. Connect your Neo N3 wallet on governance.neo.org.
  2. Find and select Everstake among the Neo Council members. Everstake's member public key is 035d574cc6a904e82dfd82d7f6fc9c2ca042d4410a4910ecc8c07a07db49dc6513.
  3. Click "Vote."

The only cost is a small GAS network fee on the vote transaction, and Neo N3's network fee per byte is 0.000001 NEO. Your NEO stays in your wallet the entire time.

Wallets You Can Vote From

You can vote from any wallet that supports Neo N3 governance. Everstake publishes step-by-step written guides for the two most common options:

Video walkthroughs are also available for Neon Wallet and OneGate Wallet.

Who You Are Voting For: Everstake's Neo Council Member

When you vote, you back Everstake's Neo Council member node, public key 035d574cc6a904e82dfd82d7f6fc9c2ca042d4410a4910ecc8c07a07db49dc6513.

Everstake is a Council member.

Everstake charges 0% on NEO voting, so the GAS your vote generates reaches you in full. The role of GAS in Neo N3 is to pay for network operations, and none of it is taken as commission.

A Neo Council member validates blocks and participates in governance, and it cannot move a voter's funds. To understand how GAS powers the network, read the role of GAS in Neo N3.

Voting Details: Fees, Minimums and Lock-Up

Your first GAS reward arrives immediately after the vote is confirmed, and there is minimum 1 NEO balance required to vote.

Why Vote for Everstake

Everstake charges a 0% fee on NEO voting, so the only cost is the Neo N3 network fee of 0.000001 NEO per byte.

Voting has no lock-up, so your NEO stays in your wallet and the vote can be changed at any time. Neo N3 governance voting has no slashing, so a vote cannot cost you NEO or GAS.

RPC Access to Neo X

Neo X is Neo's EVM-compatible sidechain with the same validator set and underlying security, but built for Solidity contracts and standard Ethereum tooling (MetaMask, Hardhat, ethers.js, Foundry).

If you're staking NEO with Everstake, you're already trusting the infrastructure that secures it.

Everstake now offers RPC endpoints for Neo X, backed by the same validator infrastructure behind our Neo staking service:

  • EVM-compatible, standard Ethereum JSON-RPC methods, drop-in for existing Ethereum tooling.
  • You can build and test for both mainnet and testnet.
  • Low latency, geo-distributed endpoints, tuned for response time.
  • 99.98% uptime backed by the same ops team running our Neo validator.
  • Archive access with full historical state.
  • Custom rate limits from free/shared access up to dedicated, SLA-backed throughput.

Neo N3 and Neo Legacy: What Changed

Neo began as AntShares, founded in 2014 by Da Hongfei and Erik Zhang, and was rebranded to NEO in June 2017. Neo N3 launched on 2 August 2021 as a separate chain from a new genesis block, bringing a revamped governance system, a new architecture and an improved economic model.

Neo Legacy is the previous version of the chain, 2.x. Core Neo N3 features are incompatible with 2.x, so the team launched Neo N3 on its own chain rather than upgrading in place, and the two versions run concurrently.

Neo Legacy stayed on long-term support for several years to give holders time to migrate, then permanently shut down on 31 October 2025 (TestNet had closed 1 June 2025), with a final snapshot taken to preserve its state.

If you still hold Neo Legacy tokens, see how NEO Legacy holders swap to Neo N3 but please verify with official NEO N3 team if the migration is still possible by the time you're reading it.
